While watching last night's basketball game in Boston (which, by the way, was outstanding), I noticed a tatto on Luke Walton's shoulder that I had missed before. Way to go Luke.

Another thing, I was watching a news program on MSNBC yesterday and they were discussing what criteria Obama should use when selecting a running mate. This older analyst speaks up and says "Like the Dead say, he should be looking for A Touch Of Grey"
I pretty sure that would never fly on Fox News.

And all I was pointing out was a tattoo. I should however congratulate you all for while taking the thread a little off track, you have been able to keep it on that new track.

Is that the same guy who got credit for recording a bunch of rap crap over his old man's Grateful Dead bootlegs? BW used to joke about this all of the time...

I think Big Bill went overboard but that's not the reason the ratings are down. As for Tirico, for a guy who is accused of stalking and trapping a woman in her garage, he should probably lay low when it comes to calling folks out.

"...(Walton) did mescaline with Mama Cass and David Crosby backstage at the Greek Theater, Berkeley, ’71..."
From the article Cliff referenced: http://www.thesportsrag.com/008_Bill_Walton.html

Deadbase didn't have a Greek Theatre listed in 1971, but I did find two '71 shows in Berkeley: 8.14.71 & 8.15.71. David Crosby was at the 14th, but not the 15th. According to the Taping Compendium, "Bill Graham comes back out to wish David Crosby, who has just joined the band onstage, a happy birthday."

The recordings for the Berkeley shows are amazing. We just got a new upload recently without the cassette gen of the previous 14th show. Take a listen. I think you'll find it to a good one. The new upload for the 15th is brilliantly clear too.

Set 1 has great versions of early 70s tunes. A good show overall.

Here's the Berkeley show from the next day, sans Crosby. Set 2 has terrific jamming from Truckin' thru Wharf.

Not trying to dispell the ESPN argument, nor did I realize it was a joke. My curiousity was to hear the show Walton kept ranting about being on mescalin with Crosby and Big Mama. Which led me to a couple of great shows I haven't heard before. That wandering into a new show is what I come to the Archive for. Enjoy my friends!

Anyone care to discuss the Phish rumor-mill again today. ;-)

Digging the groovy Other One jamming from 8/14/71, by the way...

I know, but us Portlanders will go to fisticuffs for our Walton. It's been a long spell since our one and only Championship win in 76-77.

The ending solo in Hard to Handle grooved out pretty hard too.

"No wonder we’re losing Friday viewers to ‘John Doe.’ Why? Because ‘John Doe’ doesn’t have some sad, aging, hippie freakster spewing Robert Hunter lyrics every three seconds."

Sad, aging, hippie freakster? He just described pretty much everyone here. Except I don't think I'm sad.

I must say. reading that article, that Bill Walton sounds like a prize idiot - I'd probably punch him myself. The picture caption about the late Brent Mydland, about whom the average NBA fan does not give a rat's ass had me laughing out loud. Very funny.

Prize idiot? I'm afraid that moniker could be worn by us all if "spewing Robert Hunter lyrics" is a qualification. Yeah, the guy is goofy, but he knows his stuff, both about the NBA and the Dead.

The point is that it's one thing to know your stuff and quite another to show it off inappropriately and indiscriminately. And the fact that he can so easily weave Dead titles into everyday speech (Eyes of the World, Touch of Grey, Unbroken Chain and so on) ends up making them look just a little bit cliched.

We shall agree to disagree. While I do feel he does lay it on a bit thick at times, there are many here who do the same; he's just out in the spotlight. But its obvious that somebody likes him because he is still getting air time. Perhaps he should limit his "cliched references" to his work on the radio, but such is life. Like Mike Tyson so eloquently stated "If you don't like it, change your station"

I guess I just don't know enough about US sports and sports commentators to have spotted the painfully obvious spoofing.
Yes, somewhat pathetic excuse making I know - but it's all I have and I'm sticking with it.

How are you doing otherwise, Mr Smith?

Hi Rob

Most of us, too, are only vaguely aware of the particulars of athletic ventures in your neighborhood, so ignorance goes both ways.

Currently, though, local concerns are focused on the nasty weather situation developing. How about tornadoes? Ever get 'em? Because if I don't get hit by one this evening, I'll be fine.
